College football season is steadily approaching and for all you Buckeye fans, here is the 2008 Buckeye football preview. This is going to highlight key players and additions to the team for 2008.
The Ohio State Buckeyes were last years Big Ten conference champs and National Title game runners-up. Looking to repeat last years success but this year win the National Championship, Jim Tressel has all the players he needs to compete for the crystal football in 2008.The Buckeyes return Senior quarterback Todd Boeckman who enjoyed success in his first year as starting quarterback last year. Boeckman threw for 2,379 yards and 25 TDs with 14 INTs while leading the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record and a berth in the National Championship game where they were defeated by the Louisiana State Tigers. Behind Boeckman at quarterback is the highly touted freshman Terrelle Pryor. Pryor, the 5-star recruit out of Jeannette Senior High School in Pennsylvania is a dual threat quarterback who may split time with Boeckman this season, and certainly is expected to fully take the reigns of the Buckeye offense in the 2009 season. Pryor put up impressive numbers in High School as he is the only player in Pennsylvania High School football history to pass for 4,000 yards and run for 4,000 yards over his High School career. The Buckeyes will not be short on offense from the quarterback position, that is for sure.
The main target for Boeckman returns for his Senior season. He is Brian Robiskie, who will be a candidate for the Biletnikoff award for the nation's top wide receiver. Robiskie looks to build off his breakout Junior season and is returning to spark the Buckeye passing attack. Junior Running back Chris"Beanie" Wells anchors this offense and is a Heisman Memorial Trophy candidate. Wells rushed for 1609 yards on 274 carries for 15 TDs. He also ripped the Michigan defense for 222 yards last season in the annual rivalry game. As Beanie goes, so goes the Buckeyes' offense.
The Offensive line is highlighted by Seniors Alex Boone and Steve Rehring. The loss of Kirk Barton hurts them a bit, but Boone and Rehring are veteran players and Boeckman and Wells will benefit greatly from them.
Senior Cornerback Malcolm Jenkins returns to the secondary and is a great asset to the Buckeye defense. Jenkins was runner up in 2007 for the Jim Thorpe Award which is awarded to the nation's top defensive back. Jenkins was also named to First-team All Big Ten and Second-team All-American in 2007. The anchor of the Buckeye defense Senior James Laurinaitis returns from a stellar 2007 season where he was the Dick Butkus Award recipient for the top linebacker in the nation. Laurinaitis also garnered First-team All-American honors. Senior linebacker Marcus Freeman is also returning and is a great player along side Laurinaitis. On a defense that lost defensive lineman Vernon Gholston to the NFL draft, the Buckeye defense is still a formidable foe.
The place kicking duties will be handled by Senior Ryan Pretorius and returning kicks and punts will Ray Small the electric Junior wide receiver.
Like every season, The Ohio State Buckeyes are primed to make a run at the Big Ten title as well as The National Championship game. This roster is loaded with talent at all positions and they look to repeat last years' success except this time finish it with a victory in the National Championship game.
